Description

My friend complained that he has to use mozilla because the moin wiki he is acrive on gives him trouble witj Elinks. Knowing that Lynx does great on moin, I found this very odd, so I asked for more detail...

Have to use Mozilla -- it doesn't work properly in ELinks. :'(

I asked him to lake a look at the regular moin site with it, since his moin is 1.3.4...

Not really --- it uses too much JavaScript.

It does? I thought we only used that for the GUI editor.

MediaWiki only ranks as slightly "better". In terms of usability for ELinks usemod is good, but it's a shite wiki in general.

Umm, it seems to miss out fragments in URL handling -- everytime I goto save a page edited in ELinks, I get a #preview fragment does not exist" error. Also, the updates of pages doesn't always work -- and instead of saving it, it will say that the page is open, but it lies, since it was only me editing it at the time.

Plus the layout looks bad in ELinks, but that's just because ELinks has no DOM yet. :P

He's on Elinks version 0.10. 0.11 claims to be released as stable, but that's so new that it's not in the distros yet, and he said he's also got a version out of CVS, so I don't know if the problem will go away from that. He's on debian, but I note that Elinks is the textmode browser offered on SuSE these days.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Fetch elinks from debian unstable
  2. surf a moinmoin page, find weird layout
  3. try to edit a page anyway, experience the symptoms above.

Example

Details

MoinMoin Version

1.3.4 or 1.5rc1

OS and Version

Debian unstable

Python Version

n/a on user end, same effect on moin home site

Server Setup

presumably any. other site is 1.3.4 moin standalone

Workaround

Use a different browser. (not exactly the friendly open feeling for wiki fun)

Discussion

I'm thinking we should turn off any JS offered to Elinks, and see if that helps.

Elinks is also capable of extremely crude color behavior; he also says my sysadmoin (classic_dark) is unusable because the attempts that map to color map a poor one for foreground color. Of course there I encouraged him to login and switch his theme, but with this trait above it was hardly worth the fight from his view.

I confirmed that I cannot edit pages, suffer from the GUI button in text edit view and get the missing anchor error message in elinks. -- AlexanderSchremmer 2006-01-03 15:33:13
