2006-01-20 EU Commission aims for software patents in 2006

EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy has announced the start of a drive to create a "Community Patent", which would establish the EPO as the arbitrer of patents in Europe. The Community Patent will legalize the EPO practice to grant software patents in Europe. more

The European Union's Parliament decided to drop the draft about patents, so everything stays as it was.

Software patents would make development of Free Software (like MoinMoin is) terribly complicated and financially dangerous.

Software developers would have to live in fear (except those in big corporations with lots of money and strong legal/patent departments). Especially small and independant software developers could be threatened by more or less trivial patents. :-(
